" Not Every Hero Wears a Cape. Plan and Practice Your Escape!" is the theme for the 2019 Fire Prevention Week (FPW) which is October 6-12. Many people never think about what they would do if they were awaken in the middle of the night by their smoke detector. Some people aren't sure if their smoke detectors even work. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), working smoke alarms cut the risk of dying in a home fire in half.
NFPA encourages developing home fire escape plans and running drills to make sure every member of the home knows what to do in case of a fire. These practices are not limited to just homes but businesses should have plans and run drills with their employees. Escape plans should include maps showing all doors and windows, making sure someone will help children and those with disabilities, and an established meeting point outside the home. After you have made your escape plan run the drill!
